DELIVERING HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION WHERE IT IS NEEDED MOST

In West Africa, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has a longstanding commitment to Human Rights education. In Senegal, Mali and Cote d’Ivoire, the Foundation annually organizes the Academy for training on International Human Rights Law. The one-to-two-weeks training is hosted in cooperation with the Strasbourg-based International Institute for Human Rights, Rene Cassin Foundation (IIDH-FRC) as well as the French embassies.

The Academy aims at providing an education of excellence in the field of international criminal law and Human Rights to French-speaking legal professionals from the West-African sub region. It is tailored to the needs in the respective countries based on cooperation with the United Nations System, as for example the United Nations Stabilisation Force in Mali (MINUSMA) or the United Nation’s Regional office for Human Rights in Senegal.

The training strengthened the participants' common understanding of both, the new challenges that affect the international protection of Human Rights and the application of international criminal law to reinforce its protective mechanisms. Content may also include the elaboration of Human Rights plaints on grounds of legal scrutiny, which may be used for prosecution on a national or international level. Last but not least, the training promotes local Human Rights activities and raises understanding and ownership on the part of national stakeholders. This includes involving African trainers as well as working with renowned international experts.

In the medium term, these activities of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation to foster Human Rights education also aim at promoting the awareness of Human Rights as a core liberal value, while building respect for civil liberties and beyond.
