Winston Churchill was quoted as saying that of all human qualities, courage is the most valued. In the form of civil courage, it has enormous power when it is non-violent and based on the universal principles of human rights.
Courage also distinguishes human rights defenders and advocates, journalists, activists and all others in their daily human rights work. Under the aggravating conditions of the pandemic, they have continued to perform impressively worldwide also in 2021, as partners of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.
Defending human rights is required in all countries. Be it in states divided by internal armed conflicts or in stable states. Human rights must be defended in non-democratic states as well as in those with a strong liberal democracy, in states that are just developing economically and in those that have long been considered developed.
In more than 60 countries, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom promotes the work of human rights defenders, journalists and representatives of civil society. With their actions, they repeatedly create new spaces to control governments and those in power. It takes people who fight for freedom under adverse circumstances and stand up for human rights and threatened fellow human beings, and these people need support.
